How to save money travelling

Most of us don’t think of travelling as a cheap activity. In order to book our dream trip, we might need to save up for a few years, or invest our money using a website like Wealthify.

However, it’s important to travel and see the world, and it doesn’t necessarily have to break the bank. If you’re smart and money savvy, there are plenty of ways to cut costs. So, how can you save money whilst travelling?

Pack light

Whether you’re going on a luxury holiday or a quick getaway, you can be money savvy by packing light. Many airlines don’t charge for carry-on luggage, so if you can fit all your belongings into a small suitcase that you take on the plane, you won’t need to pay extra for a suitcase. Whilst you might not love the idea of leaving some of your favourite clothes behind, many carry-on cases are roomier than you might expect. By rolling your clothes tightly and planning outfits beforehand, it’s easier than you might think. Plus, if you only have limited room in your case, you’ll be less tempted to splash the cash on souvenirs.

Travel by coach

When we think of travelling, we don’t often think of coaches. Most holiday-goers would much rather take to the skies in an airplane than sit on a coach for many hours. However, there are many benefits of travelling by coach, as they’re much more environmentally friendly – and they’re cheap. Whilst your journey will be longer, you can still play games and watch movies. Plus, you get the added benefit of being able to get off the coach for occasional breaks to stretch your legs – which you don’t on a long flight.

Stay in a hostel

Whilst most people might opt for staying in a luxury hotel on their travels, this is often where most of our money is spent. So, why not consider staying in a hostel? Hostels can be great, quirky places filled with character, and you get the chance to meet lots of new people. You might have an image of sharing a busy dorm with lots of others, but most hostels have plenty of options, and you can often pick a room for you and those you’re travelling with.

Go self-catered

Another great way to save money while travelling is by staying somewhere with self- catering facilities. This means that you won’t pay for food every evening, and can cook cheap meals for you and your family. You’ll want to sample the local cuisine and enjoy fresh produce, so you can still treat yourself to a meal or two out – but you won’t be spending extra money on breakfast, coffee and snacks. Plus, you can make sure that you’re eating healthy, nutritious meals that keep you energised.

Do your research

The best way to save money whilst travelling is to do your research. Look into where you’re going beforehand, and find out where the best cheap places to eat are. Don’t get scammed by tourist prices.
