The great thing about your garden is that you can make it a place of sanctuary in many ways. When the pandemic hit, a lot of people started investing in outbuildings because it gave them an extra space to escape to, but it also became an extra room for their property. So if you are considering setting up a garden room or an outbuilding, what are the things you need to consider?

How Secure Do You Need It?

In many neighbourhoods, people can find themselves thinking that a garden room or shed is the perfect extension to their property, but they can find that after a while they start to leave items of importance in there, and eventually, it becomes the target for thieves.

There are things you can do to deter thieves, such as putting an alarm and installing outdoor blinds, but you’ve also got to consider if your outbuilding becomes a target for thieves.

When we are setting up an external space we’ve got to decide what we’re going to use it for. You might like it to be an extra room that covers a number of different functions, but you also need to consider if the space is actually going to be suitable for what you envision. A lot of people use an outbuilding as a place to escape to, meaning that it starts to accumulate a lot of odds and ends like exercise equipment or electrical gadgets.

Naturally, the space has to be accommodating to your vision. And while you may want to purchase a larger outbuilding you may not have enough space in the garden. As nice as it is to have extra room for your property if it ends up taking over the entire garden you might want to consider compartmentalising the space or opting for an extension on your property.

Ideally, you would want to put it as far away from the main house as possible because this will make it feel like it’s more of an escape from the norm. But in addition to this, you will have to consider if everybody else ends up using space.

You may have envisioned an outhouse purely for your needs, however, you’ve got to come to terms with the fact that after a while your children and other members of the family will want to use it as well. So do you need it closer to the house, just in case your children want to access it without getting wet in a storm?

These are a few things to consider when you are adding an outbuilding to your garden. Many places need an outhouse because their homes are not big enough, and an outbuilding can do a lot; it can be a spare room, playroom, entertainment centre, gym, or just somewhere to escape to. Just make sure that you are doing it for the right reasons and consider the above.
