Learning to prioritise
For a long time, I thought I had to do everything — and not only do everything but do it well too...
Be there for my family.
Keep the house running.
Grow my business, Beefunky.ro.
Lead AFAD.
Make time for Rotary Club Farul Genovez.
Stay connected with friends.
And, somewhere in between, remember to look after myself.
I grew up believing that mistakes were something to be ashamed of. When someone made a mistake, people judged them.
And if you were the one being judged, you were expected to feel guilty.
I am human
For a long time, I carried that belief with me.
Every mistake felt like proof that I hadn’t tried hard enough or made the right choice. I worried about disappointing people and wondered what they would think of me.
But life is complicated.
As a mum, business owner and someone involved in my community, I can’t get everything right all the time. Sometimes I make a mistake. Sometimes I have to choose between competing demands, and someone may not understand or agree with my choice.
I’m learning that I can take responsibility for a mistake without letting shame define me. I can listen, learn and try again. I don’t have to punish myself forever.
Perhaps prioritising starts with accepting that I’m human. I can’t please everyone or do everything perfectly. I can choose what matters most, give it my attention, and allow myself to grow along the way.
Priotising is not about doing everything
The truth is, there are only so many hours in a day. Some weeks, my to-do list seems to grow faster than I can cross things off. I can move from one responsibility to another and still feel as though I haven’t done enough.
But I’m learning that prioritising isn’t about doing everything. It’s about deciding what needs my attention now — and accepting that some things can wait.
At this stage of my life, my priorities are changing.
Kara is almost 18 and Anastasia is almost 14, and both are preparing for important exams.
They’re growing more independent, but they still need my support in new ways. Being there for them doesn’t always mean having all the answers.
Sometimes it means listening, making space, or simply being nearby.
My work matters to me, too. Beefunky.ro is something I’m building with care, and my role with AFAD gives me the chance to support other women entrepreneurs.
Through Rotary Club Farul Genovez, I’m also part of a community working together to make a difference. These commitments bring purpose and connection, but they also take time and energy.
I’m beginning to ask myself a few simple questions: What matters most today? What can only I do? What can wait? And am I making room for myself in the life I’m trying so hard to manage?
I don’t always get the balance right. Some days, I still say yes when I should pause and think. Other days, I have to let something go without feeling guilty. I’m learning that changing my priorities doesn’t mean I care less. It means I’m paying attention to what this season of life asks of me.
Prioritising is a work in progress. It’s choosing where my time and energy go, one day at a time. And sometimes, the most important thing on the list is not another task.
It’s being present for the people I love — and remembering that I’m one of them, too.
A reminder to love myself
I’ve been reminded of that this week...
I’ve had a really bad cold for the past five days, and it’s forced me to slow down. When I’m unwell, even the simplest things can feel like a lot.
I can’t keep going at my usual pace, and perhaps I don’t need to.
Resting and giving myself time to recover have to come first.
For the past five days, my days have looked very different from the ones I had planned…
I’ve been dealing with a heavy cold, feeling tired and trying to rest whenever I can.
The to-do list is still there, of course, but I’ve had to accept that some things can wait.
It hasn’t been easy.
I’m used to keeping busy and looking after everyone else, so slowing down can make me feel guilty. But this week has reminded me that rest isn’t wasted time.
It’s part of looking after myself.
I’m taking each day as it comes and giving myself time to feel better. For now, that’s what needs to come first.
I’m trying to remind myself that I don’t have to earn rest by finishing everything first. The work will still be there when I feel better, and the people who care about me don’t expect me to manage it all while I’m unwell.
Perhaps loving myself means listening when my body asks me to slow down, instead of feeling guilty for not keeping up. It means being patient with myself, just as I would be with someone I love.
This cold won’t last forever. For now, I’m letting the days be quieter, taking care of myself and trusting that I’ll find my usual rhythm again when I’m ready.
